James Bergstra
Dr. James Bergstra is an NSERC Banting Fellow at the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience. His graduate and post-doctoral work has focused on machine learning with biologically inspired systems, especially for computer vision. As part of his doctoral work he co-developed Theano, a popular meta-programming system for Python that can target GPUs for high-performance computation. His recent work has examined the difficulty and importance of hyperparameter optimization in machine learning systems, which motivated the creation of the hyperopt software package.
